Last week, my mom and I ate at Pepper Lunch in Robinsons Place Manila, Ermita. I was hoping to have the Beef Yakiniku Rice, but I guess it was already phased out. Maybe it was just a promo back then. I loved it, but they removed it already from their menu. Sigh. So instead, I ordered the usual -- Beef Pepper Rice.
I was not able to take photos at Pepper Lunch, but this post is actually how I make my own version.
UPDATE: My good friend sent me her photo of Pepper Rice. Credit go to Mrs. Che Villaflor.
Ingredients:
-cooked rice
-butter
-pepper (fine)
-soy sauce
optional > salt, garlic, mixed vegetables, egg
Steps:
1. Melt butter - I approximated the proportion as 1 tbsp butter per 1 cup rice. If you are putting garlic, you can add it in after the butter melted. By the way, if you are going to add mixed vegetables, double the butter as in 2 tbps per 1 cup rice as the mixed vegetables will absorb some of the butter.
2. Add the cooked rice and mix well or until the rice has been coated with the butter mixture.
3. Put the pepper. Be generous about it. It will not be spicy or hot. Trust me on this. The pepper will provide that distinct taste to the pepper rice. Let me emphasize that you do not need to add "Magic Sarap." The butter and pepper will do most of the trick, easy as that. In the photo above, I added butter because I also added rice (para hindi sayang ang pagsalang).
4. Add a bit of soy sauce - maybe 2 tsp - just to give color the rice and add some "umami" taste.
5. This is part is optional. Scramble an egg and then add it to the rice. Mix well until the egg cooks. Ready to serve.
WARNING: Mahahatsing kayo sa dami ng paminta, pero yung lang naman. Hindi ito maanghang.
God bless!
